With Blue Lizard I wanted to explore abstraction and patterns. In particular I was interested in experimenting with how a shape can still be recognizable even once it no longer has its original detail, and that the very act of abstraction can enhance the original form giving it its' own unique beauty.
The source of this piece was a wonderful little lizard who ran across the ground in front of me while I was vacationing in Lewes, Delaware at Cape Henlopen National Park. I managed to capture a photo of this lizard and loved the movement and shape so much that I wanted to draw it. That drawing became the basis for this piece and all my subsequent lizard pieces.

Framed: 13.5 inches x 11.5 inches x 2 inches (34.29cm x 29.21cm x 5.08cm)

"The Blue Lizard" is made using Miyuki Delicas in a variety of colors, providing the variation in surfaces and textures. It is a flat artwork with some sculptural elements, i.e. the lizard is raised from the surface as if running across the sand. Each bead is individually placed by the artist, Katharine Claringbould. It is mounted in a gold leaf floating frame with a black interior and is ready to hang. The artwork (not the frame) is sealed, so it is safe to touch and handle.
